About Coral Gables

Coral Gables is a separate city in Miami-Dade County, southwest of Downtown Miami. George Merrick planned it in the 1920s, and it became a city on April 29, 1925 (city history). The city calls itself "the City Beautiful", and many of its early buildings use the Mediterranean Revival style of the 1920s.

What is for sale and for rent

Houses are the main market. The three Coral Gables condo buildings in our table are mid-rise, with 10 to 13 floors, and they show the price range: David William on Biltmore Way, built in 1963, has a median asking price of $269,500. Gables Waterway Towers, from 1969, asks $675,000. Merrick Manor, finished in 2019, asks $870,000, or $889 per sq ft.

Downtown and landmarks

Downtown Coral Gables centers on Miracle Mile, the part of Coral Way between LeJeune Road and Douglas Road, with shops and restaurants (Miracle Mile). The city lists 11 national landmarks, including the Biltmore Hotel and the Venetian Pool. The University of Miami's main campus is also inside the city.

Rules that shape the city

Coral Gables controls how buildings look. A Board of Architects reviews new homes, additions, pools, signs and roof tiles. The city also keeps a local historic register and requires permits to remove larger trees. These rules protect the look of the streets, and they add steps for anyone who wants to build or renovate.

Getting around

A free city trolley runs Monday to Saturday (trolley). A pilot loop, called the Southern Loop, connects the city to the Douglas Road Metrorail station.
